A small single chamber woodfiring kiln was needed by Phoebe Wiley. She
had asked us to design a hybrid style kiln which would meet her needs now
and in the future. The following photographs show the progression of the
kiln being constructed. It was built by a team of volunteer's and they did
very well with minimal help on our part.

KILN HISTORY
A small woodfiring kiln was designed by us for Phoebe Wiley.  A group of ceramic artists, including Tim
Reece and Kathryn Hackle with the help of Phoeobe's husband Jos, have done most of the kiln
construction. This kiln is a small single chamber catenary arch woodfiring kiln. The main fire box is small in
relation to the other woodkilns we have designed and the chamber is smaller as well. The reason for this
is they wanted a smaller kiln that had many sophisticated features found in larger woodkiln structures and
could be fired often and fast to create a rapid turn around of their ceramic work. The main features of this
kiln is that it can fire fast or slowly over a long period of time. The kiln also has a great deal of flexibility in
the stoking options available. For this reason we designed it like most of the others we have done so far.
There is a single stoking door on the main fire box that will accommodate large or small wood that is
stoked onto a step grate system with many air intake controls. There is also a duel stoking port system for
the main chamber. At the end of the kiln there is a collection box leading up to the main chimney stack.
